I grew up on comics and have always dreamed of doing my own titles. In the late 90's I created Bold Faced Comics to begin that dream. Since then I have published three titles and hope to put out many more over the next few years. The reality of the comics industry is that there is an ever-dwindling readership and an ever-vanishing comic shop to support the few readers that are left. Independent creators had a nice piece of the pie in the eighties when I was in high school. Unfortunately, since then the fan base has gotten older and there has never been a young audience to replace it. Blame economics or subject matter, but the bottom line is that mainstream comics are basically dead in this country. So now that the huge comic book pie is more like a glazed donut, what is a guy like me to do. Keep making comics, of course. But doing it the old way is financial suicide. The 32 page bi-monthly indie is dead. The graphic novel is perhaps the only salvation for the independent market. Book stores are opening up their doors to new stories and unique points of view. And print-on-demand may save a self-publishers retirement savings. Bold Faced Comics
will work towards longer form stories and use the internet to build an
audience who will eventually buy the product. The BFC web site will feature
weekly updates on an ongoing comic. As well as feature a major work in
progress that will be posted till its completion. As a part time comic
creator, teacher, husband, parent, and sicilian pizza lover, I will dedicate
myself to the goal of comic book creation. I hope you enjoy the product.
